Support Danielle’s Place! See the Premier of “Soul Song!”
March 5 AND 6th, 2010
8:00pm Theatre Burlington
“Breath. Life. In certain cultures when a woman knows she is pregnant, she goes out into the wilderness with a few friends and together they stay until they hear the song of the unborn child. They recognize that every soul has its own vibration - it’s own purpose. When each of the women can hear the song, they sing it together, return to the tribe, and teach it to everyone.”
This legend is the impetus for the performance of “Soul Song” a brand new show created by artistic team Colleen Aynn and Ellen Wilkes Irmisch. The show will have it’s premier presentation as a fundraiser to support Danielle’s Place at Theatre Burlington, on Friday March 5th at 8:00 pm, tickets are $20.00.
“We felt a need to tell real life stories through music, acting and dance; and to allow people to engage in open discussions about important issues in their lives”, states Irmisch. “This is a spin off project from a show we used to do with our students at the Academy of Film and Performing Arts. At that time our show allowed teens to work through important topics in their lives. After the closing of the studio, we wanted to expand it because we realized it was not just teens, but adults too that need to have a way to express themselves.”
The show features original writing, choreography and music by the artists performing that night. “The project developed from months of discussions and work shopping pieces, ideas and poetry. The conversations have been amazing. We laugh, cry and support each other through various life trials while creating the show”, says Colleen Aynn; “and although this first venture is more female based, we are hoping to branch out to future projects which will include a male perspective.”
After the performance there will be an open discussion with the cast members for the audience. There will also be time to enjoy wine and chocolate from Equifera Estates and Lulu B Pinot Noir Wines and Walker’s Chocolates, respectively. There will also be a Silent Auction to support Danielle’s Place and sponsorship and support has been given by Salon Teo, and Fitness Firm.
We are pleased to be doing this evening as a joint project with Danielle’s Place in Burlington. This facility is committed to providing a non-judgmental, caring and supportive community to any individual whose life has been touched by an eating disorder. For a special preview attend Paddy Torsney’s International Women’s Day Celebration on the morning of March 5th to get a sneak peak of what’s to come at the performance!

1st Annual Harvest of Hope Champagne Brunch Fundraiser
On October 15 th, 2006 Danielle's Place celebrated its first annual fund-raising event at the Burlington Golf and Country Club. Over 180 people attended the event including members of the community, volunteers, staff, and local political leaders. Together we celebrated our three- year Trillium Foundation Grant of $164, 900 and a very busy first year in our new location at 895 Brant Street in Burlington . Together with ticket sales, donations and two very successful silent auction tables we raised over $9000 for Danielle's Place ! Thank you to our volunteer fundraising committee, board members, and generous attendees who made this event possible. Below is a copy of a speech that Mr. Ted McMeekin, MPP of Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Aldershot who attended our event, wrote for us.
"'The caterpillar looking up at the butterfly said "you'll never find me flying around in one of those silly things.'
Thanks for the invitation to this event. My wife Barb and I are please to be here. Along with several of my political colleagues, we want to celebrate the wonderful work of Danielle's Place and acknowledge with thanks the Trillium funding announced today. You may not know this but for every Trillium dollar in funding there are more than ten dollars in requests. The Trillium funding announcement today is a clear outward and visible manifestation of the importance attached to the work that you do - every single day. In his novel , Farewell to Arms , Ernest Hemingway writes "the world breaks all of us and then some become stronger in the places that are broken." Indeed, the provision of support and resources through Danielle's Place is helping us become stronger in the broken places of life. It also makes it possible to declare tot the world that all who suffer from depression, anxiety and panic attacks do not have to stand alone; that hope is indeed the fuel of change and that caterpillars (with a bit of encouragement and support) will continue to become butterflies, no matter what caterpillars might think. Congratulations on your successful day. Please, keep up your great work!"Thank you,
Mr. Ted McMeekin

Nelson High School's December fund-raising week
he students conducted Charity Month activities for Danielle's Place all through the month of December and raised well over $11,300. Highlights included the cafe, the head-shaving challenge which left one teacher with a unique Iroquois cut which enhanced his rap and Rubik-cube solving display at the assembly. The assembly was great fun - a talented teacher's band performing and singing. many talented dancers, bands and soloists, and on-going dry witty sketches. Some dancers did better than the belly-dancers , shimmying at the vibration rate of a hummingbird. The students were an impressive group of enthusiastic, compassionate young people, and made the difference for us this year. Way to go, Nelson!!

Danielle's Place Grand Opening
We celebrated our first year's progress to date with our donors, volunteers, granting agencies and supportive politicians and service clubs. We are grateful to the business and philanthropic communities for their prompt response to the needs of our client community. It has moved at a breath-taking pace, and while we have a ways yet to go, we could not have asked for a more successful first year. It was a successful grand opening - with Mayor Rob MacIsaac, Patricia Torsney, Kevin Flynn, Cam Jackson , Carol d'Amelio, Joan Lougheed lending a supportive presence. Dr. Michael Shih and Emily Shih, donors of our new site on the transit corridor, were our special honorees , and as always, a modest, unassuming presence , despite the incredible generosity of their gift to us. Especially heart warming was the arrival of Dr. Gail McVey and her daughter; this dedicated lady has done ground-breaking research and tested prevention work in this field and is a role model to us all. It was a real joy to see Jan and Rosy from the Toronto group FADE, who are working so diligently with us all to address the needs and suffering of those affected by eating disorders. The event was beautifully co-ordinated by Anne-Marie Joki and Eleanor Marino, with many hours of hard work also put in by Mike Champion, Bev and Jim Miller, Sandra Steinberg, and many others, including all the volunteers who made sandwiches and baked goodies for us. The Board members donated the wine, The Second Cup donated 3 thermoses of coffee. Flowerland provided such lovely floral displays and Longo's donated two large food trays.
Mayor MacIsaac and Patricia Torsney MP gave us heartfelt encouragement in thei words to the audience after the ribbon-cutting. Cam Jackson's speech reflected a strong commitment to work on regulating the reporting of death statistics so as to reflect underlying eating disorders. He is also an advocate for more equitable health care, and for financial support from the new health promotion Ministry for support centres such as ours. It was a most welcome message. It was a pleasure to celebrate our first ten months and our new donated site with the many supporters, donors and volunteers who keep us energized.
