Eating Disorder Definitions
What are Eating Disorders?

Eating disorders are complex illnesses that are a result of psychological, biological and social issues. Eating disorders are not limited by age or gender. They affect children, teens and adults as well as both men and women. While eating disorders are characterized by unhealthy behaviors around food, they are not exclusively about food or the body. There is usually something else going on causing the individual to focus on controlling or obsessing about their food and often their weight. For instance, anxiety, trauma, depression and self-worth can contribute to the start of an eating disorder.

Many people with eating disorders also have difficulty managing their emotion. They can find it difficult to experience their emotions and therefore tend to avoid uncomfortable feelings or they may become overwhelmed by intense emotions and have difficulty calming themselves down. There can be a lot of secrecy around eating, exercise, and other techniques used for weight loss as well as strong feelings of anxiety, guilt and shame.

Three common eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder. Sometimes medical professionals use the term Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified when there are different combinations and types of symptoms than are typically found in one of the 3 main types of eating disorders.  All types, however, can seriously affect your health.

Why get help?

Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder and need to be taken very seriously. Dealing with your eating disorder as soon as possible, in an early stage, is very important.  Research shows that obtaining help within the first year will lead to a faster recovery time and helps prevent symptoms from becoming chronic. The following are examples of just a few of the physical consequences eating disorders can have on your body:
  • Low or high blood pressure
  • Low heart rate
  • Heart failure
  • Dental problems
  • Osteoporosis
  • Inflammation and/or rupturing of esophagus from vomiting
  • Muscle loss/weakness
  • Damage to major organs.
  • Lifelong infertility

If you are concerned about your behaviors around food and think you may have an eating disorder, speak to your doctor or contact us at Danielle’s Place for more information and support.

Definitions:

Anorexia Nervosa: Anorexia is characterized by distorted body image and excessive dieting that leads to extreme weight loss. The obsession with controlling eating can come from the feeling or belief that by controlling food and the body we can control our lives.

Common symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa are:
  • Losing large amounts of weight
  • An obsessive desire to be thinner
  • Inability to maintain normal weight for your age and height
  • Using laxatives or diet pills, vomiting and excessive exercise to rid the body of food
  • Extreme fear of weight gain
  • Being unable to see your body as it really is

Bulimia Nervosa: Bulimia is characterized by cycles of bingeing (eating excessive amounts of food at one time) and purging (such as self-induced vomiting or use of laxatives). This cycle of behavior is often an attempt to regulate feelings and worries. People with Bulimia may maintain a normal weight but can still be doing considerable harm to themselves and their bodies.

Common Symptoms of Bulimia Nervosa are:
  • Repeated episodes of bingeing and purging
  • Feeling out of control while eating
  • Using laxatives or diet pills, vomiting and excessive exercise to rid the body of food
  • Frequent dieting
  • Using body shape and weight as a measure of their worth

Binge Eating Disorder: People with Binge Eating Disorder eat excessive amounts of food at one time. Binge eating can be a response to hunger as a result of dieting or restricting. It is also a way to comfort and avoid feelings and self-sooth. People with Binge Eating Disorder do not usually try to compensate for their eating by purging or over exercising.

Common Symptoms of Binge Eating Disorder are:
  • Eating large amounts of food frequently and at one time.
  • Feeling out of control and unable to stop while eating.
  • Feeling guilt and shame about binges.
  • Eating in secret.
